Sapling.ai: A Review

Sapling is an extension for a web browser that checks and corrects your writing. Like other extensions, Sapling corrects your grammatical mistakes and typos. Sapling is a pay-to-use tool, but has a free Chrome extension that works on Gmail, LinkedIn, Outlook and Google Documents. With Premium, Sapling offers users the option to autocomplete emails and create drafts. Its default language is English, but it could offer correcting and autocorrect in other languages, too.  It has 3 subscription options: free, pro and enterprise. Free subscription includes Google Chrome, Outlook and Google Documents extension, Pro subscription is $25 per month and offers the users autocorrect, and advanced suggestions on vocabulary like Grammarly. Enterprise subscription’s fee is unknown and it is kind of a subscription for companies and/or teams. Enterprise subscription offers team analytics, which is a pro in my opinion because the members can always see their mistakes and it is a chance to improve their writing with analytics. Free subscription, or the extension for Google Chrome, is basically an editor, users sign up to Sapling and then could start using Sapling, if the user does not want to pay $25 a month for correcting their spelling mistakes, this extension could be useful.

It offers a 30 day pro trial, which means that you are still a free user but can benefit from pro for free for 30 days. Pro subsription autocorrects, and shows you the mistakes you make, and the correct writing for you, which is another pro, because only correcting a mistake will not help the writer in the long term. Saying that, with autocorrect, the writer will keep making mistakes as they do not know the correct writing and the writer will rely on Sapling, or other editors to correct their mistakes, which is not wanted, because bloggers for example, are supposed to get better and better in writing. When they use an autocorrect editor that does not show the mistakes that the writers make, it will be hard for the writers to see their mistakes. And if the writers cannot see their mistakes, they cannot work on correcting them. In short, Sapling’s showing the mistakes is another pro for bloggers.

Sapling is also easy to use, users can choose to use autocorrect automatically, which is a pro option that free users can us efor 30 days. Automatical autocorrect works with the backtick key (`), and works accordingly with your writing data, or the most common sentences in English. For example, when you write “Hi, how are…”, Sapling offers you to autofill the sentence as “Hi, how are you today?”, if you press the backtick key, the sentence is automatically written. According to your writing data, Sapling can also detect your sentence patterns and offer to autofill it, just like smartphone keyboards. Or if the person writes emails everyday saying that he/she wants the reports of the day with a text like: “Can I get the reports of today?”, Sapling autofills the mail according to user’s writing data and save time everyday.

But are there not cons, or disadvantages of Sapling? Of course there are, especially for blog writers, Sapling, as well as the other correcting tools, has serious disadvantages. One of them is the fact that Sapling and other writing tools make writers lazy. A writer could use and benefit from Sapling, but many users can get lazier using it, and the result of that is blog articles getting worse. When Sapling is used, it finds and offers to correct grammatical mistakes, so the writer does not check the article himself/herself. That is maybe a disadvantage but it depends on the writer himself/herself. If the writer takes his/her job seriously, then he/she will not get lazier using Sapling, and in the long term, good writers will get better, they will save time using Sapling; and bad writers will get worse and lazier using Sapling. Sapling is a tool for improving the quality of writing, and still it is the choice of the user to use Sapling in good or bad ways.
