How to avoid English grammar mistakes
How to Avoid Making Mistakes While Writing
Articles
For bloggers whose mother tongue is not
English, writing articles for various blogs is, or may be a good money-earning
source. A Turkish blogger living in Turkey, for example, could work from home writing
English articles for blogs and earn good money while doing it. But at the same
time, since the blogger’s native language is not English, the mistakes made in
the process of writing could be a problem. These mistakes may cause your
article to lose its value and you may even lose your job if you constantly make
mistakes. So the first step to avoid making mistakes would be to realize that
it is important to write properly.
But it is not to say that making mistakes is the
worst thing on earth. It is only natural to make mistakes, especially your
native language is not English. There is nothing to be ashamed or afraid of
making mistakes. So you will start to get better at writing eventually if you
really want so. For example, as a Turkish-speaking person, making mistakes is
so natural. Making mistakes paves the road to proper and Professional articles.
In this article, I will try to give some
advice to improve your writing. First, I should start with repeating the
fact that there is nothing wrong with making mistakes. There is a famous
saying: “Practise makes perfect.”, it actually means you should continue
writing even if you make mistakes, if you practice hard enough, your writing
will eventually get better. If you have one article to write for example, you
should write numerous articles and read all of them many times to write the
ultimate article. And keep in mind that you can achieve nothing if you do not
work enough. Try to write in your daily life, I mean after watching the news,
write your opinions about a news story. You cannot write perfect articles out
of nowhere, so you ought to write a lot to write well.
Second, you should read and listen a lot.
Reading, of course in English, will help you express yourself better in words
and indirectly will make your writing better. Never forget that the best
writers are also the best readers. Academics for instance, they read a great
deal of books for just writing one article. You should know what you write
about, in a broad sense. It is essential. There is nothing to argue about this.
Because every piece is written to be read. So readers actually read a lot, too.
Your articles should be chosen to read, so they must be written by a good
reader. On the other hand, reading will help you reduce spelling errors, which
foreign speakers/writers face a lot. “Advice” and “advise”, for example, are
generally confused words. In this example, it is important to know one(advice)
is noun and the other (advise) is a verb. When writing, you might confuse these
two, but again, if you are a good reader, you will notice the mistake when you
read your article again. Another example is that some words are hard to write,
for example “congratulations” is generally misspelled among Turkish people, to
avoid spelling errors, the writer of the article should read the article again
and again before posting it.
The other way to lessen mistakes, I am talking
about spelling errors, could be a bit old-fashioned, but is one of the most
effective ways. Get yourself a dictionary, and read it for a while everyday,
before sleeping, while having a rest, whenever you want! You will see your
writing will get better. And some studies indicate that people understand
things better when they read before sleeping, the information you read before
sleeping is repeated during your sleep. So get yourself a dictionary and read
it for 10-15 minutes before you sleep, and your writing will get better. With
this method, the number of your mistakes will decrease.
Another way is to read newspapers and articles
written in English very often. As I said before, the more you read, the better
you write. This could be Rule 1 of writing better articles, especially if you
are not a native English speaker. Reading another blogs, newspapers and
magazines will not only lessen your spelling mistakes, but it will also help
you to learn new words and have different perspective about the things you are
writing about. And looking a subject from different perspectives, which you
learn by literally reading anything about that subject, is a valuable aspect.
